Disparities in Women's Reproductive Health: Implications for Social Work

In the United States, many disparities exist in women’s reproductive health. For example, African American women are three to four times more likely to die in childbirth than non-Hispanic white women. This course will prepare students for engaging a range of topics related to women’s reproductive health from preconception (before pregnancy), during the pregnancy period, and postpartum. Students will learn about the unique needs and challenges in reproductive health; understand the systems and structures that impact the health and wellbeing of women during their reproductive years; and develop assessment and intervention skills to improve primary and mental health care for this population. Each class will explore disparities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic location to assess how these differences influence health outcomes.
